ZA truckers advised to stay off the roads ahead of national shutdown
The South African Road Freight Association has advised road transporters to minimise operations during the national shutdown on Monday, 20th March
The national shutdown, planned for Monday, 20th March, has been called by a South African group called the Economic Freedom Fighters and will see workers across a range of sectors stand down in protest of the ongoing rolling blackouts in the country, with the aim to put pressure on President Cyril Ramaphosa to resign.
Despite ministers of South Africa's Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster claiming that all entry ports into South Africa will be open during Monday's national shutdown and that it will be a 'normal business day', the Road Freight Association (RFA) has declined joining the protest and has released a statement urging all road freight transporters to minimise operations for safety reasons with blockades expected.
With cargo movements limited, the national shutdown is likely to have an impact on operations both on the road and at staging yards.
