Empty Container Restitution Felixstowe

The ever increasing demands on the UK supply chain have seen the UK driver shortage result in an inability to restitute empty containers back at the port of Felixstowe due to the large amount of laden import containers now congesting the port.

We have been advised in the last 24 hours that both Evergreen and Maersk are unable to accept any empty containers back at the port, with both carriers having offered up alternative solutions. Most of the alternative restitution points are in the North of England with very few if any options being made available in the South. This will add further pressure and increased cost to already stretched UK container haulage companies, with some of the cost being passed on to importers/consignees.

Over the last couple of days we’ve seen containers being collected from Felixstowe and delivered to Northampton with the carrier advising that the empty needed to be taken to Liverpool. The wider implications included additional costs and the impact on the haulier’s ability to fulfil other deliveries which had to be cancelled.

We will continue to monitor the situation but are being told that these issues could continue into week 42.
