BREXIT IS HERE.

At 11pm today, the UK leaves the European Union, but what will happen after 31 January 2020?

From an international trade perspective, nothing changes until at least 31st December 2020. During this transition period, the EU rules, which the UK works within in relation to customs, VAT and excise will continue exactly as they do now.

The next few months will see a lot of negotiations between the UK and the EU. Aspects such as security and the environment should be considerably quick to conclude. However, top of the list will be the discussions around a potential Free Trade Deal with the EU and this certainly won’t be easy to finalise.

Whatever happens, customs entries between the UK and the EU will be re-introduced once the transition period ends, so although preparations can be put on hold, they should not be forgotten.

This extra time on your hands offers a good opportunity to make sure you are fully compliant with your current customs processes and are paying the right amount of Duty/VAT.

With HMRC using an audit based approach to compliance, you want to avoid any surprises when the time comes.
