Brexit is here - and with it a deal

On 24th December 2020, one week ahead of the end of the transition period, the EU and the UK announced the agreement on a Brexit deal. British parliament are now finalising legislation to implement the trade deal agreed last week ahead of crunch time tomorrow.

WHAT WE KNOW & WHAT TO DO
  • Live customs operations will begin on 31st December at 11pm with no additional transition period being introduced. The requirement for customs declarations will remain in place under the Free Trade Agreement.
  • Goods moving between the EU and the UK will do so on a Duty-Free basis provided they comply with relevant rules of origin. To import goods into the UK Duty Free, they will need to be of EU origin.
    • More detailed guidance on the origin requirements and documentation required can be found here.
  • Excise duty is still payable - If you are involved in the importation of wines, spirits, tobacco etc, look out!
  • For Sanitary and Phytosanitary goods (SPS), export health (or phytosanitary) certificates are required from 1st January 2021 in Ireland, and for GB imports from April 2021.
  • If you move live animals, products of animal origin or SPS goods to the EU, TRACES NT will be required to use straight away, even if/when an export health certificate is not required initially. Please read more on TRACES here
    • The use of IPAFFS (for GB imports) will be required from April 2021 - more on this here.
  • If you are VAT registered, UK VAT is handled through the VAT return and accounted for at importation – more on this here.
    • Please be reminded that in order to utilise Postponed VAT Accounting, you must let us know in writing you wish to use this. All you need to do to give this authorisation is email PVA@woodlandgroup.com.
    • Please put the subject as PVA, along with the following wording: We <Company Name> hereby authorise Woodland Global Ltd to utilise Postponed VAT Accounting on our behalf. Our VAT number is <Enter VAT Number>.
  • f you are not VAT registered, VAT is payable on the import declaration.
