Egypt's Suez Canal blocked by container ship

A container ship operated by Taiwanese transport company Evergreen Marine has become wedged across Egypt's Suez Canal, one of the world's busiest trade routes.

As a result, hundreds of containers bound for Rotterdam from China are delayed and vessels in transit impacted unable to pass.

The operation to move the grounded vessel may take 2-5 days, impacting Asia ocean traffic further. The delay to some vessels on route to North European Ports including the UK may impact cargo on these routes until well into Q2. Shippers may switch to using air freight, resulting in reduced capacity and an expected increase in rates.

This adds to mounting pressure on the freight industry, which has experienced volatile changes and a significant increase in rates over the last year.

We’re in contact with carriers regarding possible diversion of cargo vessels in transit and will update all affected clients as soon as we can.
