Air freight India: from origin to final delivery

Woodland Group coordinates air freight to and from India, connecting major Indian gateways with the UK, Europe, USA, Asia and destinations worldwide. From origin collection and routing through to customs clearance and final delivery, each shipment is managed around your cargo, required transit time and destination.

Accredited and trusted across the global air freight network
A growing air freight market with multiple gateway options

India's air freight market continues to grow, with Indian airports handling a record 3.72 million tonnes of cargo in 2024–25. International cargo reached 2.32 million tonnes, up 14% year on year, with Delhi and Mumbai handling the largest international volumes and Bengaluru continuing to grow rapidly.

Unlike markets where air freight is concentrated around a single dominant airport, India has several important international gateways. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai each serve different manufacturing regions and commodity flows, so the right departure point will often depend as much on where your cargo originates as its final destination.

Routing matters too. Long-haul shipments from India may travel directly or connect through an international hub, with the chosen route affecting transit time, cost and the number of handovers along the way. Understanding those options before booking can make a significant difference to both the price and reliability of a shipment.

For UK-bound cargo, the UK–India Free Trade Agreement also changes the wider landed-cost calculation. The agreement came into force on 15 July 2026, providing preferential tariff treatment for qualifying goods. Understanding whether your products qualify, and having the correct origin evidence in place, should form part of the shipping decision.

Air freight from India, connected to key international markets

Our outbound air freight services from India are built around where your cargo needs to go, how quickly it needs to arrive and the most appropriate routing. From scheduled consolidation and day-definite services to express options for more urgent shipments, we coordinate the service around your cargo and required delivery date.

Air freight from India to the UK

Cargo is collected at origin and routed through the Indian gateway and airline service best suited to the shipment. On arrival in the UK, customs clearance is managed by our in-house team, giving us greater control over the process from arrival through to final delivery.

Our UK transport network then provides onward delivery across the country, keeping customs clearance and the final road movement within Woodland Group. Where goods qualify for preferential treatment under the UK–India Free Trade Agreement, our customs team can also support with classification, origin requirements and the evidence needed to make a valid preference claim.

What shapes an air freight shipment to or from India

Direct or transit: the routing decision

minus

Depending on the origin, destination and available capacity, air freight from India may move on a direct service or connect through an international hub. That routing can affect transit time, cost, the number of cargo handovers and the risk of disruption along the way.

Direct services can offer shorter transit times and fewer handovers, while connecting services can provide greater choice across schedules, capacity and price. The right option depends on what matters most for the shipment.

We compare the available routings against your required delivery date, cargo and budget, with realistic transit expectations so you can make an informed decision before booking.

Choosing the gateway

plus

India's major air freight gateways serve different manufacturing regions and offer different combinations of airline capacity, schedules and international connections. Delhi provides extensive coverage for northern India, while Mumbai is a major gateway for western India. Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai provide important options for cargo originating across southern India, including technology, engineering, pharmaceutical and manufacturing supply chains.

The nearest airport will often be the logical starting point, but not always the best routing. Flight schedules, available capacity, onward connections and the road movement to the airport can all affect the overall transit time and cost. We compare those options to determine which gateway and routing best fit the shipment.

How we operate in India

plus

Woodland Group serves India through established partners at origin, connected to our own offices, customs teams and delivery networks across key destination markets.

Origin collection and Indian export formalities are coordinated through partners selected around the gateway, routing and cargo requirements. Our teams then manage the international movement and destination requirements, providing a consistent point of contact throughout the shipment.

Customs support at destination

plus

Across key destination markets, our own customs teams provide clearance support alongside the air freight movement. This includes AEO-authorised operations in the UK and Ireland, our own bonded Customs CFS facilities in the USA and AEO-certified bonded warehousing in the Netherlands.

Bringing freight and customs expertise together means potential classification, documentation and clearance requirements can be considered before the cargo arrives, helping reduce avoidable delays at destination.

Pharmaceutical and temperature-controlled cargo

plus

India is a major pharmaceutical manufacturing and export market, with established life sciences clusters around gateways including Hyderabad and Mumbai.

For cargo requiring controlled conditions, we can coordinate temperature-controlled solutions around the requirements of the product and lane, including specialist packaging, priority handling and active or passive container options. Shipment milestones and relevant documentation can also be managed through Woodland Online.

Dangerous goods

plus

Our air freight teams are IATA DGR trained and can support the movement of dangerous goods, including lithium batteries, aerosols, paints and chemicals.

Requirements vary according to the commodity, classification, quantity, packaging and aircraft type. Share the relevant safety data sheet and shipment details with our team and we can establish the applicable requirements and available routing before booking.

Consolidation and deferred services

plus

For shipments where the fastest possible uplift isn't required, scheduled consolidation and deferred options can provide a more cost-effective alternative to express air freight.

We compare service levels against the required delivery date, shipment size and available routing, helping determine whether express, consolidation or a deferred service provides the right balance of transit time and cost.

Digital visibility

plus

Woodland Online brings shipment milestones, documents, pricing and emissions data together in one place, with exception reporting helping teams identify shipments that require attention.

For businesses that prefer to work within their existing systems, API and ERP integrations can provide shipment status and documentation directly into established workflows, alongside reporting configured around business requirements.

India Air Freight Frequently Asked Questions FAQs

Which Indian airports handle the most air cargo?

minus

Delhi handled 729,784 tonnes of international air cargo in the 2024-25 financial year, ahead of Mumbai at 654,756 tonnes and Bengaluru at 321,283 tonnes. Bengaluru grew fastest at 21%. Hyderabad handled 98,825 tonnes and carries a significant share of India's pharmaceutical and life sciences volume. Indian airports handled 3.72 million tonnes in total across the year, a record, with international cargo up 14%. Figures are from the Airports Authority of India.

Where does Woodland Group move air freight from India to?

plus

We arrange air freight from India to the UK, mainland Europe, the USA and destinations across Asia Pacific, as well as inbound air freight into India. At destination, shipments can connect directly into Woodland Group’s own network, including our customs and transport operations in the UK, bonded Customs CFS facilities in the USA, AEO-certified bonded warehousing in the Netherlands, and offices across Asia.

Does Woodland Group have an office in India?

plus

Woodland Group serves India through our established partner network at origin, connecting shipments into our own offices, customs teams, warehousing and delivery networks at destination. This gives customers local support in India alongside direct Woodland Group control across key destination markets.

Why do air freight transit times from India vary?

plus

Transit times depend on the origin airport, destination, airline capacity and whether the shipment travels on a direct or connecting service. Indirect routings can offer greater capacity or more competitive rates but introduce additional connection and handling time.

Peak periods, screening requirements, dangerous goods restrictions and seasonal changes in airline schedules can also affect transit times. We assess the available routing options based on the required delivery date, cargo and cost.

Which goods move by air from India?

plus

Air freight from India is commonly used for pharmaceuticals and healthcare products, textiles and apparel, engineered goods and machinery components, automotive parts, chemicals, perishables and other high-value or time-sensitive cargo.

Air freight is generally most appropriate where speed, product value, shelf life or a fixed delivery deadline outweigh the additional cost compared with ocean freight.

Who handles customs clearance on air freight from India?

plus

For shipments arriving within our own network, Woodland Group can manage destination customs clearance alongside the freight movement. Our customs capabilities include AEO-authorised operations in the UK and Ireland, bonded Customs CFS facilities in the USA and AEO-certified bonded warehousing in the Netherlands.

Export customs formalities in India are coordinated through our partner network at origin.

Can you collect from my supplier in India?

plus

Yes. We can arrange collection from suppliers in India through our partner network and move the shipment to the most appropriate departure airport.

The best gateway will depend on the supplier’s location, cargo, available airline services and required transit time. In some cases, using the closest major airport can be more efficient than moving cargo further by road to access an alternative flight.

Can you handle pharmaceutical air freight from India?

plus

Yes. Woodland Group supports the movement of pharmaceuticals, healthcare products and other temperature-sensitive cargo from India, with solutions tailored to the product, temperature requirements and route.

Depending on the shipment, this can include temperature-controlled handling, active or passive packaging solutions, priority services and shipment visibility through Woodland Online.

Can you handle dangerous goods by air from India?

plus

Yes. Woodland Group can arrange air freight for a range of dangerous goods, including lithium batteries, aerosols, paints and chemicals, subject to classification, airline acceptance and applicable IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.

Provide the relevant safety data sheet and shipment details when requesting a quote so that we can confirm the appropriate packing, documentation, routing and aircraft restrictions before the shipment is booked.

What does the UK–India Free Trade Agreement mean for air freight?

plus

The UK–India Free Trade Agreement came into force on 15 July 2026 and introduced preferential tariff treatment for a wide range of goods traded between the two countries.

The agreement does not directly change the cost of air freight, but reduced or eliminated customs duties can lower the overall landed cost of qualifying goods. Preferential treatment must be correctly claimed and the relevant rules of origin and supporting evidence must be met.

Our UK–India trade page provides further information on the agreement and its implications for importers and exporters.

How do I get an air freight quote from India?

plus

To request an air freight quote from India, provide the collection location, destination, commodity, number of pieces, gross weight, dimensions and required delivery date.

We can then assess the available direct and indirect services and recommend an appropriate routing based on transit time and cost. Accurate dimensions are important because air freight is charged according to either actual or volumetric weight, whichever is greater.
