Accredited and trusted across the global air freight network
Connected expertise behind every shipment
The United States remains the UK's largest single goods export market, taking 14.9% of all UK goods exports between April 2025 and February 2026.. UK goods exports to the US, excluding precious metals, fell by £1.5 billion in April 2025 when the new tariffs took effect, a drop of 24.7%, and have stayed low since. Machinery and transport equipment took the largest share of that fall, with chemicals also significantly affected.
For businesses moving cargo by air across the Atlantic, changes to US tariffs have made classification, valuation and entry accuracy increasingly important commercial considerations. A misclassified line on a US entry can have a direct impact on landed cost whichis one reason we file our own entries rather than passing them to a third-party broker.
The freight itself has not gone away. Transatlantic air is one of the densest bellyhold markets in the world, and the gateways that matter for it are not the ones that top the US cargo tables. Anchorage, Louisville and Memphis lead those rankings largely on integrator volume, rather than international forwarder traffic. For UK and European shippers, key air freight gateways include New York, Newark, Chicago and Los Angeles, supported by our US operations and bonded Customs CFS facilities in New Jersey and Chicago.

Air freight services to and from the USA cargo by air
The transatlantic lane runs both ways for us, with established air freight services into and out of the USA. Whichever way your cargo moves, the screening, the entry and the delivery are managed by the same team.
Air freight to the USA
Air freight into the USA requires careful management of customs as well as routing. We file the US customs entries ourselves through our own licensed team, with cargo deconsolidated in our own bonded Customs CFS facilities rather than being passed to a third party.
That becomes particularly important for mixed consignments and goods where tariff classification, duty or valuation requires closer attention. Where there is a potential issue, we can identify and address it before the goods fly rather than after they arrive in the USA.

What we own on the ground in the USA extra care
Our own bonded Customs CFS, on both sides of the country
A Customs CFS is a facility approved by US Customs and Border Protection to receive, deconsolidate and hold import cargo until it is cleared. Woodland Group operates bonded Customs CFS facilities in Elizabeth, New Jersey and Chicago, giving us direct control of import air freight through two of the country's key international gateways.
Cargo can be deconsolidated and customs cleared within our facilities, with visibility from arrival through to release. For freight moving through New York and New Jersey, our Elizabeth facility provides access to both Newark Liberty and JFK, supported by our wider New York operation.
TSA-approved cargo screening
Air cargo leaving the USA must meet TSA security requirements before it can be tendered to an airline. Woodland Group operates as a TSA Certified Cargo Screening Facility, allowing cargo to be screened within our own facilities as part of the handling process rather than requiring a separate handover to a third-party screening provider.
For time-critical air freight exports, keeping screening within the operation can help reduce additional handling and protect critical airline cut-offs.
US customs entries, filed by us
We file US import and export entries in-house rather than routing them to an outside broker. Classification, valuation, documentation and customs compliance can therefore be managed alongside the air freight movement by the same team.
With changes to US tariffs increasing the cost implications of classification and valuation decisions, we can identify potential issues before goods move rather than after they arrive in the USA.
C-TPAT certified
Woodland Group is certified under the Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism, the CBP programme that recognises secure supply chains. In practice it means fewer examinations, faster release and a documented security standard your own auditors can point at.
For customers with their own C-TPAT obligations, working with a certified forwarder removes a supplier assessment from your list rather than adding one.
New York and New Jersey
Our New York and New Jersey operation supports air freight through JFK and Newark Liberty, two of the principal international air cargo gateways serving the US east coast.
Our large-scale facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey is a Class A building with bonded Customs CFS status, extensive racking and flexible floor storage capable of accommodating oversized cargo. The facility supports import air and ocean CFS freight, air cargo screening, transload and cross-dock operations, as well as export consolidation.
Located close to Newark Liberty and within reach of JFK, the facility provides a strategic gateway for air freight between New York, the wider US market, the UK and Europe.
Chicago
Our Chicago facility provides substantial bonded Customs CFS capacity and flexible cargo-handling capabilities, strategically located close to the Chicago Ramp and Chicago O’Hare.
Chicago is a major gateway for air freight moving between the US Midwest, UK and Europe. Having bonded space close to the gateway means import cargo can be deconsolidated and cleared before onward distribution, while our operation also supports air freight exports from Chicago to international destinations.
US sectors we support with air freight
Air freight is critical for industries where speed, security, specialist handling and supply chain visibility matter most. Our teams support businesses across a range of sectors, combining international air freight expertise with customs, compliance and specialist handling capabilities.

Air Freight USA Frequently Asked Questions FAQs
Which US airports does Woodland Group move air freight through?
Woodland Group moves air freight through the US gateways that matter for transatlantic and transpacific traffic, principally New York JFK, Newark Liberty, Chicago O'Hare and Los Angeles. Our Elizabeth, New Jersey facility serves the New York and New Jersey gateways, and our Chicago facility sits close to O'Hare and the Chicago Ramp. Both hold bonded Customs CFS status, so import cargo can be deconsolidated and cleared in our own buildings rather than a third party's.
How have US tariffs changed air freight from the UK to the USA?
The tariffs introduced in April 2025 cut UK goods exports to the US sharply, by £1.5 billion or 24.7% in that month alone excluding precious metals, and volumes have stayed low since. Machinery and transport equipment saw the largest fall, driven by cars, with chemicals and pharmaceutical products close behind.
The practical effect on air freight is that tariff classification and customs valuation now carry direct cost consequences, so the entry has become part of the commercial decision rather than a step after it.
Figures are from Office for National Statistics data covering April 2025 to February 2026.
Who files the US customs entry on an air freight import?
Woodland Group files US import entries in-house as part of the air freight service, so you do not need to appoint a separate customs broker. Classification, valuation, documentation and regulatory compliance sit with the same team that handled the freight, and the cargo is deconsolidated in our own bonded Customs CFS at Elizabeth, New Jersey or Chicago. Keeping the freight and the entry with one party means one point of accountability if a shipment is held.
Do I need an ISF for air freight into the USA?
No. Importer Security Filing, often called ISF or 10+2, applies to ocean cargo only and is not required for air shipments into the USA. Air imports are covered by advance electronic cargo information submitted by the carrier or forwarder before departure. This is one of the most common misunderstandings we see from businesses switching a shipment from ocean to air at short notice, and it costs people time they do not have. What air imports do need is an accurate entry, filed promptly, with correct classification and valuation.
What is a TSA Certified Cargo Screening Facility?
A TSA Certified Cargo Screening Facility is a business approved by the US Transportation Security Administration to screen air cargo before it is tendered to an airline. All cargo leaving the USA by air must be screened, and only an approved facility or the airline itself can do it. Woodland Group holds CCSF status, which means your cargo is screened in our own building as part of the handling rather than queuing at a separate screening agent, and that is often what decides whether a shipment makes its cut-off.
What is C-TPAT, and does it matter for air freight?
C-TPAT is the Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism, a voluntary US Customs and Border Protection programme that certifies businesses operating secure supply chains. Woodland Group is C-TPAT certified. For air freight it means a lower examination rate, faster release at the border and a documented security standard your own auditors can point at. If your business holds C-TPAT status of its own, using a certified forwarder removes a supplier assessment from your list rather than adding one.
What is a Customs CFS, and why does it matter?
A Customs CFS, or container freight station, is a facility approved by US Customs and Border Protection to receive, deconsolidate and hold import cargo until it has been cleared. Woodland Group holds CFS status at both Elizabeth, New Jersey and Chicago. Most forwarders rent space in someone else's. Holding it ourselves means import air freight is broken down and cleared in our own building, with full visibility from arrival to release and one party accountable if something is held.
What are the busiest US airports for air cargo?
Anchorage was the busiest North American cargo airport in 2025 at 3.85 million tonnes, followed by Louisville, Miami and Memphis, all of which are driven by integrator and express hub traffic rather than international forwarder volume. For UK and European air freight the gateways that matter are Chicago O'Hare at 2,125,628 tonnes, Los Angeles at 2,070,220 tonnes and New York JFK at 1,464,252 tonnes. Figures are from Airports Council International North America for 2025.
Can you handle dangerous goods by air to and from the USA?
Yes. Woodland Group is IATA DGR trained and ships dangerous goods by air as standard, including lithium batteries, aerosols, paints and chemicals. Classification, packing instructions, shipper's declarations, labelling and airline acceptance are handled in-house rather than passed to a specialist. Send us the safety data sheet and we will confirm what can fly, on which aircraft type, and what it will cost, before you commit to anything.
Can you handle US eCommerce fulfilment alongside air freight?
Yes. Both our US sites run eCommerce fulfilment alongside freight handling, with same-day pick, pack and dispatch, WMS integration into the major shopping platforms, multi-carrier dispatch across more than 530 tracked carriers and Amazon CARP approved carrier status. Because the same sites hold bonded Customs CFS status, stock can arrive by air, clear customs and enter the fulfilment operation without leaving the building or changing hands.
How do I get a USA air freight quote?
Send us the lane, the gross weight and dimensions, the commodity and the date you need it there, and we will come back with a routing, a rate and a realistic transit. If your goods are affected by the 2025 tariff changes, tell us the commodity codes you are using and we will check them before you book. For a firm quote we need dimensions rather than an estimated weight, because chargeable weight on low-density cargo is usually set by volume.
