Air freight UK screened, cleared and delivered by one team

Woodland Group is a UK air freight forwarder and IATA-accredited agent moving over 30 million kgs of air cargo a year. We screen in our own CAA-approved facilities, file customs entries in-house, and deliver on our own fleet from 14 UK sites.

The role of air freight in UK trade

Air freight carries a relatively small proportion of UK trade by weight, but a significant share by value. In 2025, Heathrow alone handled £293 billion of goods – more than a quarter of the UK's total trade by value – making it the country's largest port by value, ahead of every UK seaport.

Around three-quarters of UK air cargo by value passes through Heathrow. This reflects the role air freight plays in moving high-value, time-sensitive and perishable goods where speed, security or shelf life can outweigh the higher cost of transportation.

UK airports handled 2.66 million tonnes of air cargo in 2025, up 4% year on year and the highest annual total in the CAA's current ten-year series. Around two-thirds travelled in the hold of scheduled passenger aircraft rather than on dedicated freighters, making passenger connectivity an important factor in determining available routes and capacity.

The UK market remains concentrated around Heathrow, East Midlands and Stansted, which together handle more than four-fifths of UK air cargo. Regional gateways are growing too, with Birmingham's cargo volumes increasing 10% in 2025 and Manchester's 7%. Prestwick recorded significantly higher growth from a much smaller base.

Air freight accounts for 32% of the freight Woodland Group moves, representing more than 30 million kg each year, with 63% moving inbound. That profile has helped shape our UK operation, with screening, customs clearance and trucking managed through our own facilities and teams.

Air freight in and out of the UK

From routine imports and scheduled export consolidations to urgent and specialist cargo, we manage air freight into and out of the UK through all major UK gateways. One team manages the shipment from booking and customs clearance through to collection or final delivery.

Air freight imports into the UK

Getting UK air freight imports moving quickly depends on having customs clearance ready before the aircraft arrives. We pre-lodge customs entries against the airline's arrival data, so cargo moves from the shed to your door rather than into storage.

We hold AEO authorisation with HMRC and file import entries in-house, which means one party is accountable for the freight, the entry and the delivery. Where duty deferment, inward processing or customs warehousing applies, our customs specialists can manage this as part of the wider shipment.

What we own, and what most forwarders rent

In-house screening and the known consignor question

minus

Every piece of air cargo leaving the UK must be secured, either by a CAA-approved regulated agent or by arriving from a known consignor. Woodland Group is a regulated agent and screens cargo in its own facilities with X-ray methods.

That matters for one practical reason: a shipment screened on our own site is not sitting in a queue at a third-party screening facility, risking a missed flight cut-off. If you would rather hold known consignor status yourself, we will tell you honestly whether it is worth the audit.

Our own ETSF, and why your cargo does not sit at the airport

plus

An External Temporary Storage Facility (ETSF) is an HMRC-approved facility where imported goods can be held under customs control before they are cleared. Woodland Group operates its own ETSF facilities, allowing uncleared air freight to be moved from the airport into our own facilities rather than remaining in a third-party transit shed awaiting clearance or onward movement.

The practical effect is control. Clearance happens where our customs team sits, unpacking and inspection happen on our floor, and if an entry is queried we are the ones dealing with it rather than chasing a handling agent. It also means storage charges are ours to manage rather than a bill you find out about later.

UK customs clearance, filed by us

plus

Woodland Group holds AEO authorisation from HMRC and files UK import and export declarations in-house through CDS. The customs team sits alongside the air freight team, not in a separate business.

Entries are pre-lodged against arrival data so clearance is done before the cargo is ready to move. Where classification, duty deferment, inward processing or customs warehousing applies, we handle it, and we will tell you when a ruling is worth getting.

Time-critical, AOG and same-day

plus

When a production line has stopped or an aircraft is grounded, the priority is not finding the cheapest routing; it is finding the first viable option that will move. We provide next-flight-out and hand-carry services for time-critical shipments, with air charter available when scheduled services cannot meet the requirement.

Our own UK fleet can manage collection and transfer to the departure airport, reducing reliance on third-party courier schedules at origin. For aerospace and automotive customers, we can also manage dangerous goods requirements alongside time-critical movements, where restrictions on what can be carried can significantly reduce the available routing options.

Where a shipment is exceptionally urgent and scheduled services cannot meet the requirement, we can arrange a dedicated air charter.

Temperature-controlled and pharmaceutical air freight

plus

Cold chain is held at every handover or it is not held at all. We move pharmaceuticals, healthcare products, perishables and other climate-sensitive cargo under controlled conditions from UK collection through to uplift.

That means qualified packaging, priority ramp handling, active or passive containers to suit the lane, and continuous monitoring you can see in Woodland Online. The same capability supports our food and beverage customers, where the audit trail matters too.

Dangerous goods from UK airports

plus

We are IATA DGR trained and routinely ship dangerous goods from UK airports, rather than treating them as an exception that needs to be handed off to a third-party specialist.

Classification, packing instructions, Shipper's Declarations, labelling and airline acceptance are handled in-house, including for lithium batteries, aerosols, paints and chemicals. Send us the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) and we will advise what can be accepted for air freight, the available routing options and the associated cost.

Our own UK fleet and final mile

plus

Woodland Group runs one of the largest privately owned domestic transport fleets in the UK: 150 or more vehicles across 14 sites, moving over 100,000 full loads a year, with no reliance on subcontractors for the road legs around an air move.

It is a FORS Silver and DVSA Earned Recognition operation, and was named Logistics UK’s Road Transport Operator of the Year in 2025 . When haulage capacity tightens, having our own vehicles and drivers gives us greater control over collection and onward delivery.

UK warehousing, bonded and AEO

plus

Combining air freight and warehousing within the same operation removes unnecessary handovers. Our UK network includes bonded and AEO-certified customs warehousing, crossdock and transload, as well as BRCGS-rated facilities for food and packaging.

At Doncaster and Coventry, our air freight operations are combined with warehousing and fulfilment, allowing cargo to arrive, clear customs, be stored, picked and dispatched for delivery without leaving the Woodland network or being handed to a third-party provider.

Digital visibility

plus

Woodland Online, our digital shipment management platform, brings live shipment milestones, documents, pricing and emissions data together in one place, with exception flags that highlight potential issues before they turn into delays.

If your team would rather not log into another portal, we integrate instead. API and ERP connections push shipment status and documents into the systems your teams already use, with reporting delivered in the format your business needs.

DDP, project cargo and multi-country moves

plus

Delivered Duty Paid (DDP) means the seller takes responsibility for delivering the goods to the agreed destination, including managing import customs clearance and the associated duties and taxes. It is straightforward to agree and more difficult to execute, because it requires the ability to manage the customs entry and compliance requirements in the destination country as well as moving the freight.

We handle DDP movements as a routine part of the operation, alongside project cargo and shipments moving through several countries before they land. These are the shipments where customs capability becomes just as important as the flight itself. Having our own customs teams at origin and destination helps us manage clearance, compliance and onward delivery as part of a single operation, rather than handing the process between multiple providers.

Air Freight UK FAQs

Which UK airports does Woodland Group move air freight through?

minus

Woodland Group moves air freight through all of the UK's main cargo gateways, principally London Heathrow, East Midlands, London Stansted, Manchester and Birmingham. Our Hayes site sits alongside the Heathrow cargo area, and our Coventry, Dewsbury, Doncaster and Manchester sites feed the Midlands and northern gateways on our own fleet. Which gateway is right depends on your lane, your cargo and your cut-off, and we will route to the one that actually gets the shipment there rather than the one nearest our door.

What is the busiest UK airport for air freight?

plus

London Heathrow is by far the UK's busiest air cargo airport, handling 1,549,027 tonnes in 2025, around 58% of all UK air cargo. East Midlands is second with 382,747 tonnes, driven by dedicated freighters and express operators, and London Stansted third with 298,567 tonnes. Heathrow's dominance comes from bellyhold capacity on long-haul passenger flights, which is why high-value and time-critical cargo tends to route through it even when the shipper is nowhere near London. Figures are from Civil Aviation Authority airport data for 2025.

How long does air freight take into the UK?

plus

Air freight into the UK typically takes 2 to 4 days airport to airport from Asia, 1 to 2 days from North America, and same or next day from mainland Europe, with door to door adding roughly two days for collection, clearance and final delivery. Deferred and consolidated services usually add 2 to 4 days in exchange for a lower rate. Chinese New Year, Q4 peak and UK bank holidays extend all of these, so book earlier through those windows.

How much does air freight cost to or from the UK?

plus

UK air freight is priced on chargeable weight multiplied by the rate per kilo for that lane and service level, plus fuel and security surcharges, airline and terminal handling, and any screening, customs clearance, collection or final delivery. Chargeable weight is whichever is greater: actual gross weight, or volumetric weight calculated as length x width x height in centimetres divided by 6,000 per piece. Rates move with capacity and season, so a quote holds for a defined period rather than indefinitely. The estimate tool above gives an indicative range in seconds.

Do I need to be a known consignor to send air freight from the UK?

plus

No. You do not need known consignor status to export air freight from the UK, because a CAA approved regulated agent can screen the cargo on your behalf. Known consignor status lets you secure cargo at your own premises so it does not need screening later, which suits high volumes and cargo that is difficult to x-ray, but it requires a formal application, a site security programme and staff vetting. Woodland Group is a regulated agent and screens in its own facilities, so most customers do not need to hold the status themselves.

What is a CAA regulated agent?

plus

Who files the customs entry on a UK air freight import?

plus

Woodland Group files UK import declarations in-house through CDS as part of the air freight service, so you do not need to appoint a separate customs broker. Every commercial air freight import into the UK needs a declaration filed by someone authorised to do it, and keeping it with your forwarder means one party is accountable for the freight and the entry. We hold AEO authorisation from HM Revenue & Customs and pre-lodge entries against airline arrival data, so clearance is done before the cargo is ready to move.

What is an ETSF, and why does it matter on an air freight import?

plus

An ETSF, or External Temporary Storage Facility, is a site approved by HMRC to hold air cargo that has arrived in the UK but has not yet been customs cleared. Without one, uncleared cargo stays in the airline or handling agent's shed until clearance is complete, on their timetable and at their storage rates. Woodland Group operates its own ETSF facilities, so import cargo moves off the airport into our building, is cleared by our own customs team, and is unpacked, inspected or delivered from there. For anyone importing regularly it removes a handover, a supplier and a category of charge you cannot control.

Can Woodland Group collect from anywhere in the UK?

plus

Yes. Woodland Group operates its own UK fleet of more than 150 vehicles from 14 sites, covering collection and delivery nationwide without relying on subcontractors. That fleet moves over 100,000 full loads a year and is FORS Silver and DVSA Earned Recognition accredited. Because the road legs sit with the same team as the flight and the customs entry, a delay at one stage gets absorbed at the next rather than becoming your problem to solve.

Can you handle dangerous goods by air from UK airports?

plus

Yes. Woodland Group is IATA DGR trained and ships dangerous goods from UK airports as standard, including lithium batteries, aerosols, paints and chemicals. Classification, packing instructions, shipper's declarations, labelling and airline acceptance are handled in-house rather than passed to a specialist. Send us the safety data sheet and we will confirm what can fly, on which aircraft type, and what it will cost, before you commit to anything.

Do you offer temperature-controlled air freight from the UK?

plus

Yes. Woodland Group moves pharmaceuticals, healthcare products, perishables and other climate-sensitive cargo under controlled conditions from UK collection through to final delivery. That covers qualified packaging, priority ramp handling, active or passive containers to suit the lane, and continuous monitoring visible in Woodland Online. Our UK warehousing includes temperature-controlled and BRCGS-rated space, so the cold chain does not break between the warehouse and the ramp.

How much air cargo does the UK handle each year?

plus

UK airports handled 2.66 million tonnes of air cargo in 2025, up 4% on 2024 and the highest annual total in the CAA's current ten-year series. Around two thirds of it flew in the hold of scheduled passenger aircraft rather than on dedicated freighters. Heathrow alone accounted for 1.55 million tonnes, and Heathrow, East Midlands and Stansted together handled more than four fifths of the national total.

How do I get a UK air freight quote?

plus

Send us the lane, the gross weight and dimensions, the commodity and the date you need it there, and we will come back with a routing, a rate and a realistic transit. The estimate tool on this page gives an indicative range in seconds if you want a number before you speak to anyone. For a firm quote we need dimensions rather than an estimated weight, because chargeable weight on low-density cargo is usually set by volume, not by the scales.

How important is air freight to UK trade?

plus

Air freight carries a small share of the UK's trade by weight and a very large share of it by value. Heathrow alone handled £293 billion of goods in 2025, more than a quarter of all UK trade by value, making it the UK's largest port by value ahead of every seaport, and around three-quarters of UK air cargo by value passes through it. That gap between weight and value is the case for the mode: businesses use air for the goods where speed, security or shelf life is worth more than the freight rate.

What happens if there is no capacity on my usual routing?

plus

Every scheduled service we run has a contingency routing behind it, and we will move your cargo onto it rather than let it sit. On US lanes that usually means switching between JFK and Newark, or routing Boston freight through New York with a trucking leg. On Australian traffic it means an alternative gateway such as Melbourne. For UK imports, where capacity is genuinely tight we will bring cargo in through a European hub and truck the final leg. Seasonal capacity shortages and airline rate movements are the two things that most often disrupt an air booking, and both are more manageable when the alternative is decided in advance rather than on the day.
