CHANGES AHEAD - New Brexit update

The UK has announced that full border controls on imports from the EU will be introduced on 1st January 2022.

The relaxation of these rules throughout 2021 may have resulted in some businesses delaying preparation for these changes - if so, it is essential to act now.


Goods imported from the UK will be subject to the same customs requirements as those from the rest of the world. This means that import customs declarations will need to be completed prior to goods leaving the EU and import checks will be made on consignments arriving.

This is in stark contrast to the current requirements. Some importers have so far opted to defer their declarations until after goods have arrived using the CFSP scheme, while others may have completed import declarations with them being less time critical.

It will be a requirement for the importer to provide the carrier with the customs entry number generated before the shipment leaves the EU. If it is not provided, the truck will not be able to proceed, with costly results due to delays of transit times and demurrage.

At the beginning of 2021 the delays to imports did not materialise to the extent predicted, largely thanks to the easements and lack of checks. This new zero-tolerance approach will cause shipment delays if carriers do not have the correct information.

Limited warehousing space may also be an issue leading up to 2022 as businesses may stockpile goods (at a time where warehousing space is already at a premium).

Preparation is key. Make sure your customs broker has capacity to handle your customs clearance requirements in 2022. With the deferred entry scheme coming to an end at the end of the year, customs agents will be in even higher demand.
