USA TO AUSTRALIA - BMSB SURCHARGES END

With the 2019/2020 Brown Marmorated Stink Bomb (BMSB) season ending in both Australia and New Zealand, the requirements to fumigate containers originating in the USA and destined for Australia will no longer apply until Sept 1, 2020.
As a result, the BMSB surcharges levied by carriers for cargo from the USA to Australia will not apply from May 1st to August 31st, 2020.
The risk season for Australia ends for goods that arrive in Australian territory by 31st May 2020 (inclusive). For goods that are shipped prior to 30 April 2020 and arrive after 31 May 2020, they may be subject to intervention as required by the Department of Agriculture (DoA).
The risk season for New Zealand ends for goods that arrive in New Zealand territory on 30th April (inclusive). The New Zealand season runs one-month shorter than Australia. The Ministry of Prime Industries (MPI) may apply emergency measures if they find BMSB infestations.
From experience with previous BMSB seasons, the Department will continue to intervene (documentation holds and or inspections) in containers arriving after the 31st of May that were shipped prior to the 30th of April.
The “shipped” date has in previous seasons been the laden on board date but we have seen examples where the department has used container tracking to determine that the container was gated into the departing wharf prior to the laden on board date and subject the container to mandatory treatment. Please keep this in mind when determining if a container requires treatment.
