UK Customs: CHIEF to CDS key dates

Please be aware of key dates relating to UK exports for the transition from CHIEF to the Customs Declarations Service

Following our latest advisory on the CHIEF to CDS transition, HMRC has released a list of key dates for those exporting goods from the UK.

With the announcement from HMRC that all export declarations must be made via CDS by 30th November, 2023, please see a list below of key dates for the transition to the new system for exports.

With a staggered introduction to CDS, based on HMRC's pre-determined groups, it is important to be aware of which dates may affect your business in order to be prepared for the transition.

Key CHIEF to CDS dates for exporters:

From late February, export declarants solely moving goods through UK non-inventory ports (using GCMS) will be contacted by HMRC with instructions on how to start using CDS with third-party software.

From May, HMRC will contact export declarants using the National Export System service to complete their existing export declarations through CHIEF with instructions on how to use the new 'make an export declaration' online platform for declarations through CDS.

From September, HMRC will contact export declarants using both inventory-linked ports and Designated Export Place movements in order to instruct them on how to start making their export declarations through CDS using third-party software.

After 30th November, 2023, all export declarations must be made using CDS.

Are you ready for the switch?

Please see below a preparation checklist to ensure that your business is ready to make export declarations through CDS
